Information

Barking Towers in East London
Studio Egret West has won planning permission for four interlinked residential towers – the tallest 26 storeys high – in Barking town centre, east London.
The scheme is set to deliver 225 homes for private sale and 49 shared-ownership homes, plus 485m² of commercial space, next to the town’s railway station on behalf of Swan Housing Group.
Because of its scale, the application must now be referred to London mayor Boris Johnson for final approval.
A report by planners at London Borough of Barking and Dagenham said: ‘The proposal would make for an interesting and impressive addition to the town centre built form, marking the arrival into Barking Station and adding a distinctive silhouette to the skyline with its staggered cluster of tall buildings.
‘Officers consider the proposed development to be of an exemplar design and quality, which in turn justifies the proposed building heights.’

A materials strategy submitted with the application said that the building would use Portland stone combined with metal cladding.
All homes will have either a private balcony or winter garden, and the development also includes two landscaped communal roof gardens
The project will bring back into use a site that has remained unused since 2004. Planners said the scheme was ’of a far superior quality to other proposals which have been presented for this site over some 10 or more years’.
Lucas Lawrence, director at Studio Egret West, said: ‘The memorable curved forms, panoramic views, generosity of balconies and palette of high-quality materials introduce a memorable new building to the area that sets a high-quality benchmark for the future development of the new housing zones around Barking station.’ (via ArchitectsJournal)
