West Village Towers in Calgary
Several years of building boom have drastically transformed the streets of Calgary. With several thousand new residents now living in and around the downtown area, the once sleepy arterials of one of Canada's major urban centres are gradually coming to life. West of the downtown core at the northeast corner of 9 Avenue SW and 11 Street SW, a parcel which previously held an auto dealership has begun its metamorphosis into a dense, mixed-use city block.
Developed by Intergulf-Cidex — Wexford Developments having sold its interest back in July 2015 — the multi-tower complex named West Village Towers will bring 575 new residential units to the neighbourhood. Consisting of three towers that measure in at 150 metres, 125 metres, and 100 metres, the complex also includes an expansive podium occupied by approximately 8,400 square metres of ground-level retail spaces and second-floor office space. It also offers large patio areas while the base's structure will be partially accessible to residents thanks to landscaped terraces.
Above, each of the three NORR Dubai (Yahya Jan)-designed highrises will be characterized by three distinct slopping roofs recalling the peaks of the Rocky Mountains, visible in the distance. This feature is also present at ground level, with the podium roofline ascending towards 10 Street SW before ending abruptly. In contrast to the complex podium's earthy tones, the towers will be clad in a mix of glazing ranging from clear to blue. Finally, according to the latest renderings, all units will feature a sheltered balcony, while the parking entrance and delivery facilities will be accessed from underneath the podium through a mid-block covered lane.
The demolition of the commercial structure which stood on the lot suggest that construction might start some time this year, in compliance with the developer's wish to begin the process in 2016 for a tentative delivery in 2018. (via Sky Rise Cities)
